Training the Keys of Possession Play

4 v 1 or 4 v 2

Have the players start playing this as soon as they arrive. Vary the size of the area based on the number of players. Start with 3 v 1 and progress to 4 v 1 and 4 v 2 as more players arrive. This gets the players moving right away.

Coaching Points

  1. Right /Left / Split support
  2. Sharpening angles
  3. Movement to support
    1. Move toward the ball NOT away from it
    2. Off the shoulder of defenders
      1. Break lines of pressure
  4. First touch
  5. Quality of passes
  6. When to dribble

Variations

  1. One touch after five passes
  2. Stay extra for 10 passes or a split
  3. Must receive with sole
