Quick Play and Pressing

  • Game is played in a 20 yard by 30 yard area
  • 5v5 with two neutral players.
  •  The grid has two small goals that are one yard wide are set in the middle of each end line of the grid. Additional, each corner has a small goal that is one yard wide.
Coaching Points

  • The players must move the ball away from pressure. If they get 2-3 passes in the same area, then they need to move it away to another area right away.

  • The possessing team tries to get 6 passes to score. If the defending team gets possession they look to score right away on one of the small goals to switch roles.

  • One teams tries to maintain possession for 90 seconds. If the ball goes out of bounds it goes back to them right away. For every six passes they complete they get 1 point. The defending team tries to win it and score quickly to one of the small goals.
Technical/Tactical 50 mins
Turn or Trail / Turn Away from Pressure

  • Divide players in groups of 3s with one ball for each group
Coaching Points

  • Look before the ball is passed and then again as it’s traveling if you have time
  • Turn with one touch
  • Focus on the quality of the pass

  • The inside player makes a long pass that is laid off by the outside player. The ball is then passed back to the outside player who turns and shields the ball from the approaching player. The first touch should be to one side or the other to draw the defender to that side. The attacker then uses their body and arms to turn while protecting the ball. The sequence continues in the opposite direction. Encourage the players to use different methods to turn: sole of the foot, outside of the foot hook, inside of the foot chop, etc.
1 v 1 Back to Pressure

  • 20×30 yards field
  • 2 Pugg goals OR 2 normal goals with GKs
Coaching Points

  • Check at an angle to receive the ball
  • Check your shoulder to see where the defender is approaching from
  • Turn as soon as you can safely
  • Finish quickly
  • Be ready to transition to defense after you pass the ball into play

A player receives a pass from their teammate while a member of the other team is pressuring them from behind. The attacker tries to turn and score in either of the two goals on the side of the area. If the defender wins the ball they can counter attack and score in either of the goals. Once the attacker either scores or loses the ball out of bounds the defender shows for a pass from their teammate and the player on the other team who previously passed the ball into play becomes the defender.

Small Sided Game 30 mins
  • Two teams with goalkeepers.
  • Playing field of 40x20m
  • One goal at each end
